14 Backgrounds created for a short animated series pilot. I led environment design, color scripting, and layout progression for storytelling shots.

The show is about the adventures of a kid named Milo who goes on adventures with his friends in space.

Style Exploration

The client requested the design and style for the show in which is sci-fi with inspiration coming from Steven Universe and Adventure time. The greatest challenge I had to overcome was to see the direction of what kind of coloring style the client wanted. They gave me examples, but I would need to figure out if they wanted a painterly design or more cel-shading.

During the production of creating the background, I would send stylization pieces to give me a direction on what the client wants. Such as these examples on the right. This left me with the client choosing style 1 and the top right corner from the options.

Process

The communication and set-up with the client was done by milestone while having constant communication through email and discord. There were three milestone checkpoints: two for sketches while the third one was for the final turn in.

I was given a sketch from the client, and a general idea on what they wanted in a scene. They gave me liberty on what the designs or colors were going to be as long as it was okay from them.

The first pass I gave them two versions of a sketch to give the client the option of what fits in their idea. I kept this first draft in color so that the next sketch would be focused on grayscale. In return, the client gave me notes and details they were looking for in the scene.

The second passed I gave the client a rough yet more defined sketch with a more clear vision after reviewing the notes given to me which gave me what I needed to do for the final results.
